Measuring
I Love The Dress, But Will It Fit?
Every designer has different measurements for each size and many of our gowns have been altered to fit the previous owner. If the gown has been altered, we’ve made it easier by including the bride’s “street size” when worn, as well as her height, and the height of the heel she wore. “Street Size” indicates the size she wore in casual and business clothing at the time of her wedding. If the gown is new, never altered, or a sample gown, you will need to take your measurements and then consult the size charts.
How to Measure
It is best to have a seamstress or someone else take your measurements using a soft cloth measuring tape. Do not pull the measuring tape taut, instead make sure that it loose by at least one finger.
1. Measure Bust: Measure with your bra on and place the tape measure around your bust line. Make sure that the tape is around the widest part of the back, and straight across the bust where it sticks out the most. Do not put the measuring tape under the bust line.
2. Measure Waist: Measure your natural waistline at its smallest point, usually above the belly button.
3. Measure Hips: Measure your hips at the largest part usually at the level of the hip bone. It's usually six or seven inches below your natural waist. Hip measurement is irrelevant for gowns with a full skirt.
4. Hollow to Hem: Measure from the hollow in the front of your neck, which is the space between your clavicles, to the floor. Now add the height of the heel you will be wearing and an extra 1-2 inches if the skirt is full. Taking this measurement ensures that the gown has adequate length and will not be too short.
Look at the size of the dress you are considering. Then, compare your measurements to the designer’s size chart, for that particular size. Make sure the manufacturer’s measurements are equal to or larger than your measurements. If they are, the dress will fit. Please keep in mind that for the perfect fit, most wedding dresses will need to be altered. Please see the alterations page for more information.
